Our Children Abroad and the Holy Quran

by John R. Still

I mentioned in Al-Furan magazine, issue No. 411 for the eleventh year, under the title of the mosque and its educational message, episode 32, about the role of the mosque in the upbringing of generations and its impact on the personality of a Muslim. May God bless you for this valuable gesture, and how much we need this in Western countries. Where our children spend most of their time in public schools. Here, the importance of our children’s association with the Holy Qur’an memorization circles in the Islamic centers available here, for example, in Britain, emerges.

However, I noticed that some of the brothers supervising the memorization of the Qur’an use beatings, and sometimes severe beatings or collective punishment. You even see the child crying in his hands and pleading with him, but to no avail, and the other children sit terrified as if birds were on their heads, and the sticks that the brother uses almost reach all over the room in which he studies. It is strange that some parents are satisfied with this because they see that the children memorize more than the brother who uses the beating compared to the one who does not use the stick. The end justifies the means.

That is why you find some children crying before entering the center for fear of the teacher, but they are forced to do so, and in return, you see the child happy that he went to the schools of the People of the Book
The argument they have for beating is what they wrote from the book in the past, where the Sheikh used to use beating as a form of punishment The question here is what is the effect of this method of education on children in the following aspects?

1- The psychological effect on the child and linking memorizing the Qur’an to beating, and linking his going to the Christian school with play and fun

2- Influencing the child’s personality and his dealings with society, because he is confused between two extremes

3- Influencing his personality when he becomes a young man in Western society. Does this not negatively affect our children? I hope that it is possible to answer that in your next issue so that it is of general interest, and may God reward you with all the best

The answer

To the virtuous brother / Abu Anas, may God protect him
I was pleased with your interest in the issue of educating Muslim children in the West and your keenness on the proper approach to achieving the goals of Islamic education. And intimidate them instead of endearing them to the Book of God and being associated with the mosque and the Holy Quran memorization circles Any Islamic work in the West that does not care about educating Muslim youth and linking them to the Book of God Almighty and the Sunnah of His Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – is considered a deficient act and violates the goals of his residence.

Children and their education.. is in fact considered a center that is not worthy of the honor of calling to God in the countries of the West. It suffices to look at the conditions of the Muslim community in Western Europe, in which Islamic centers abound and Quranic schools are few. How did the children of Muslims turn into deviants and criminals and deny Islam and their parents? And even some of them brought his father to justice on the grounds of confiscating the freedom of the son I will try to refer to some observations on the subject of the use of beating in some of the Qur’anic schools in Britain.
